Trailer Watch: Dunkirk

After a 24 hour live stream of the real life beaches where it is set, the new trailer for Christopher Nolan's WWII film Dunkirk has finally debuted online, giving a resoundingly striking look at what the latest feature from the director will entail.

“Dunkirk” opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

From this early look, Dunkirk looks different from any previous Christopher Nolan film, besides the fact it's based on an actual historical event. The use of unknown actors against major Hollywood actors like Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Hardy is also a unique strategy Nolan has utilized, and seeing a preview of that here it seems to bode well for the audience's suspension of disbelief. As for the battle sequences, the decision to use next-to-no CGI seems to pay off, as they look tremendous and visceral, and will surely make the IMAX experience all the more worth it.

Dunkirk stars Aneurin Barnard, Kenneth Branagh, James D'Arcy, Tom Glynn-Carney, Tom Hardy, Barry Keoghan, Jack Lowden, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Harry Styles, and Fionn Whitehead, and opens on July 21st, 2017.
