Trailer Watch: Thor: Ragnarok

Today the first footage from Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok arrives in the form of a unexpected teaser trailer. Taika Waititi is helming the third entry in the Thor series (and *seventeenth* installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and boy does it feel… different? See for yourself:

We knew based on Taika Waititi stellar filmography (What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) that this film would be a more comedic departure from the previous, often self-serious entries. However, based on this two-minute teaser’s use of “Immigrant Song” and late-70s sci-fi typography, Marvel might’ve realized Thor can easily fit the Guardians of the Galaxy mold, and it’s shocking how well that seems to have worked.

Newcomers to the franchise Cate Blanchett as villain Hela and Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster are given much to do in such a short time, especially Blanchett as she destroys Thor’s hammer Mjolnir within seconds. Not to mention the hilarious and thrilling reveal at the end where Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk makes a very welcome return to the big screen.

All-in-all it’s an extremely exciting time to be a Marvel fan. In 2017 we’ll get three entries to the universe for the first time and they all look stellar, with just enough of a curveball to keep audiences from snoozing seventeen films later. Thor: Ragnarok roars into theaters November 3rd, 2017. We can go see it in IMAX 3D together.
