Die Hard is on the List of 2017 National Film Registry Inductees

Die Hard made it into the National Film Registry this year and I’m pretty happy about it.

Each year since 1988, the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry Board selects up to 25 films each year to be listed alongside other films they’ve deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Members on the board represent various aspects of filmmaking—Martin Scorsese is a member of the board, last I checked.

Go back and read my reaction to last year’s NFR reveal to get more background on the process and to see why I’m so happy to see Die Hard on the list this year.

In short, I started the ‘Die Hard for the National Film Registry’ campaign five years ago. Although I took a year off to focus on other projects, I’m still beyond thrilled that the 1988 action classic is now alongside other culturally important films like Star Wars, Citizen Kane, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I’m proud of all the work I put into the campaign (a local screening of the movie, a 24-hour marathon, endless reminders for people to vote) and all of the people I met along the way. Go back and listen to my 10-part DieHardNFR series from last year. I’m proud of that run because it focuses, not only on Die Hard’s Registry-worthiness, it delves into the NFR and other notable films on and off the list.

Other notable films that made it onto this year’s list include Field of Dreams, Titanic, Dumbo, and Memento.

But Die Hard! Always Die Hard.

Be part of the process and nominate films not in the Registry (I don’t see The Thing or Robocop on there, hmm).
