The 2018 Golden Globe Nominations Have Been Announced
The next stage of awards season has begun, as ten films across two categories were selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to compete for Best Picture categories at the 75th annual Golden Globes Awards.
The leading nominee in the film category is Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water with seven nods, while Steven Spielberg’s The Post and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri trail with six each. Rounding out the Drama category is Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, which has captivated audiences since debuting at Sundance almost a year ago, and Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic Dunkirk, which may check enough boxes to be considered the (unsurprising) victor.
As with almost every year, the Musical/Comedy category features more than one outlier which doesn’t fit in with the rest. This time around it’s Jordan Peele’s social thriller Get Out, already a huge winner in various critics circles and amongst audiences based on its box office performance. The satirical bend of the film perhaps makes it more suited for the category despite tackling quite serious subject matter, though it is likely to have competition against Greta Gerwig’s unanimously praised coming-of-age dramedy Lady Bird.
In terms of surprises, the decision to give a supporting actor nod to Christopher Plummer for his recently shot performance in All the Money in the World has a controversial bend to it, given the currently unfinished film was only submitted for awards consideration to the HFPA a week ago. It remains to be seen if Plummer will have the clout to take himself farther in awards season, being a late, dark horse entrant, but given he was the first choice for the role of J. Paul Getty and remains one of our greatest living actors, chances are he could have what it takes.
Elsewhere, it’s surprising to see a lack of nods for films like The Big Sick, Logan, Wonder Woman, Blade Runner 2049, and mother!, which could face being shut out of the awards conversation should they fail to get any recognition when the Oscar nominations are announced next month. It’s also a shock to see no female directors nominated in the Best Director category, given the number of outstanding films that could have easily made the cut such as Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Kathryn Bigelow (Detroit), and Dee Rees (Mudbound).
