Show Notes on Dream a Little Deeper: The Fox and the Hound
Walt Disney Productions - as a whole - goes through a lot of ups and downs in the five years between 1977’s The Rescuers and its next film The Fox and the Hound. Public interest in Disney’s movies lessens as big blockbusters rise in popularity and the company television show struggles to find an identity. Park revenue keeps everything afloat. The Black Cauldron was supposed to premiere after The Rescuers, but production faced many issues. So, while new animators worked on that film, the company decided to go back to its roots and work on adapting Daniel P Mannix’s book The Fox and the Hound as a “traditional Disney feature.” Upon its release in 1981, the general consensus was that it was decent, good even, but many critics felt Disney was releasing the same movie over and over again.
