Dream a Little Deeper: Episode 2 - Pinocchio
This week, Alex breaks out the dictionary to define “Disney formalism” as well as the issues with the popular framework of “Classic Disney.” Dr. Justin Rawlins explains the consolidation of Hollywood into the studio system, the rise of censorship and moral codes, and the potential impact it had on Walt Disney Studios’ popular understanding. Harrison gets really excited about multiplane shots, water, and butter. Our hosts grapple with the question of who is at fault for the events that befall Pinocchio and the associated confusing messages surrounding consciences (and consciousness). Harrison analyzes the class themes buried in various characters’ clothing, and both hosts consider the very real horrors that underlie Honest John, The Coachman and Pleasure Island. Alex also examines the roles of women in the film, and breaks down Jiminy’s perceptions of women.
