The Kid Who Would Be King is now streaming on HBO NOW.

The Kid Who Would Be King (2019)

The long-awaited follow up to Attack the Block, from writer/director Joe Cornish, criminally came and went this past January without much, if any, recognition. A modern retelling of King Arthur's Court made for a generation living under Brexit, this movie is sure to find itself a sizeable audience with time. Starring Louis Ashbourne Serkis (son of Andy Serkis) as a young boy who stumbles upon King Arthur’s legendary sword Excalibur, and thus must put together his own roundtable in order to defeat an ancient enchantress trying to takeover the world. You may be thinking, like most, that there is no need for another King Arthur adaptation but trust me, Cornish has a hook that updates the tale for a young, modern audience and the film is an absolute delight.

The Game is now streaming on Netflix.

The Game (1997)

I was super excited to see David Fincher’s The Game show up on streaming. One of my few blindspots in his filmography, the movie follows a wealthy investment banker played by Michael Douglas who agrees to take part in a mysterious game his brother introduces him to. The game interjects itself into his everyday life and before long he cannot tell what is real and what is part of the game. It’s a highly entertaining, seat-gripping thrill ride that features all of the Fincher trademarks we know and love. Douglas is giving an incredible performance as the movie introduces you to plot twist after plot twist, and like any Fincher film, this thing moves.

Escape From New York is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Escape From New York (1981)

Since its release in 1981, we’ve seen John Carpenter’s action classic Escape From New York ripped off, parodied, subverted, etc. more times than I can count. The movie in which Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) must go into future New York (which has been walled off and transformed into a massive city-prison) to save the president has become a staple of the genre. Due to Carpenter’s incredible set pieces, iconic characters, and one of the best casts he's ever assembled, this movie has stood for nearly 40 years as one of the best. Much like the original Star Wars, Kurt Russel, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasance, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, and Tom Atkins all bring their best to a project that on paper must read as ludicrous, and because of it this movie shines.
